As I am on this mission to switch out many of our household items for safer, clean/non-toxic products – one of my first goals was the laundry room! Really, I did try finding products that seemed better, per se, than some of the others that were available. But I am finding, the more I am informed – the better I can do for my family. My plan is to keep things pretty simple, that way I know exactly what I am giving these peeps of mine! (I’m not going to go off on the details and facts of how dryer sheets and detergents are actually really bad for you, you know where Google lives – I’m just here to offer helpful + easy + family friendly alternatives! So here we go 🙂
Here is what you will need for the Laundry Detergent:
You will also need a big 5-gallon bucket to mix and keep it in. The less stores I have to physically go to the better! So I got my the Castile soap, bucket *, and pump (not required, but I am all about making things easier in the long run) off of Amazon. You probably already have a cup of baking soda on hand, and the Super Washing Soda you can get at the grocery! The Thieves Cleaner is available is a few different sizes or as a kit, with lots of Thieves goodies (which is very helpful if you plan to replace multiple items in your home with this amazing stuff!)
*the linked bucket above seems to be unavailable at the moment | here’s another option, this one does not have a hole in the lid for a pump
In the bucket, pour the super washing soda + baking soda – cover with hot tap water and mix all together
Fill the bucket half way with more water, then add castile soap + thieves cleaner
Finish filling the bucket with water – and stir.
Use 3/4 cup for top loaders (180 loads) – Use 1/4 cup for front loaders (640 loads)
I have to be honest. While actually mixing this recipe up, I was thinking, really? Is this actually going to work? It’s so….water-y. But guys, it has been great. The Thieves cleaner is so highly concentrated and totally works together with this mix to create clothes that are actually clean – no residue included!
Thieves Cleaner is made with the power of Young Living’s Thieves oil blend (which I ran out of my kit-size bottle within a month, thank you germy season). This stuff cleans without dangerous or synthetic ingredients and makes things smell nice too! To be honest, coming straight from the washer, some of the items actually had no smell (which was a GOOD thing to me, because those same pieces of clothing went into the washer with a definite smell that I wanted gone!)
I am pairing this detergent with some of these beautiful dryer balls that I purchased from RedHead n Blue – add a few drops of my oil choice on them and done! (dryer balls have also proven to cut down on actual drying time, which also saves you some dolla bills for that electricity bill)
Laundry complete. …without inviting those creepy toxins! Now….if someone could just find a way to get these clothes folded and put away in a more timely fashion, that’d be great!
BONUS | here’s a great printable version of this recipe to take with you … I taped mine to the side of the bucket for quick and easy reference next time I need a refill (which will be awhile…) Just click – it will open a new tab, then print!
